Frequently Asked Questions

Are Cub Scouts the same as Boy Scouts?

Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts are both programs offered by the Boy Scouts of America (BSA). However, they are entirely different programs geared for different ages.  Cub Scouting is a family-oriented program designed specifically to meet the needs of Elementary School age youth.

What is a Cub Scout Family Pack?

A Cub Scout Family Pack is a group of boys and girls, adult leaders, and parents who belong to the same Cub Scout unit. A Pack usually draws its membership from an elementary school in the local area. Pack 451 draws most of its youth from Pea Ridge and Berryhill Elementary Schools but any boy or girl is welcome to join.  Each Pack is made up of Lion (Kindergarten), Tiger (1st grade), Wolf (2nd grade),Bear (3rd grade), WEBELOS (4th grade) and Arrows of Light (5th grade) Dens.  Cub Scout Packs are sponsored by a Charter Organization.

What is a Chartering Organization?

A Charter Organization is the sponsor of a Cub Scout Pack, usually a church, PTA, fraternal organization (e.g., Rotary Int’l), or some other community group. The primary responsibilities of the Charter Organization are to review and approve Pack leaders and provide a meeting place. Pack 451's Charter Organization is the American Legion Post 78 of Milton, FL.

What is a Cub Scout Den?

A Den is a small group of boys and girls of the same grade (age) level. Each Den in Pack 451 usually meets once or twice per month for about an hour to work on achievements and other activities. Each Den is led by an adult Den Leader, who is responsible for planning and conducting the activities at each Den meeting.

What does it cost to join?

The membership fee for Pack 451 is $120 per year to cover the following:

  • BSA National registration fees and insurance.
  • Gulf Coast Council program fee.
We also conduct fundraising to cover the following:
  • Award and Rank patches.
  • Achievement patches, belt loops, pins, and trophies.

Campouts and larger activities may have additional fees.  Scouts will also need to purchase a uniform shirt and a Pack t-shirt. Please talk to us before buying pants, hats, and other items available at the scout shop.  Note that the blue uniform shirt usually lasts for the first three years (Tiger through Bear) if bought large enough and the tan WEBELOS shirt will transfer over to a Troop when the Scout crosses over.

When and Where are Pack Meetings Held?

Pack 451 meets on the second Wednesday of each month throughout the school year at 6pm.  We meet at the American Legion Post 78 in Milton, FL. The Pack Calendar provides exact dates, places and times of all Pack meetings.

What are Pack meetings like?

Each Pack meeting is planned around a theme, such as "Take Apart Night", "Pinewood Derby", "Blue & Gold Banquet", etc. Most Pack meetings include awards, advancements, games, and other activities. The master of ceremonies is the Pack Cubmaster. Each Cub Scout with at least one parent is expected to attend, however, Cub Scouting is a family activity and all family members are welcome and encouraged to attend.

When and where are Den meetings held?

Dens meet once each month in addition to and separate from the Pack meeting to work on rank requirements and other fun activities.  Individual Den leaders and Den parents decide what and where to hold each Den meeting depending on their activity plan.

Who runs the Pack?

Pack 451 is run entirely by unpaid volunteers. Every one of us is a parent of a Scout in the Pack and every family is expected to contribute one Parent for leadership role to help run it.The Pack Committee, which consists of the Committee Chairman, Cubmaster, Membership/Advancement Coordinator, Treasurer, and Den Leaders.  They develop budgets, approve expenses, arrange for facilities and conducts overall planning. The Den Leaders and Assistant Den Leaders are most directly involved with the Cub Scouts. The Pack also has other Adult Volunteers who carry out critical duties although they usually don’t wear a uniform.

How can my son or daughter join Pack 451?

All boys and girls in K through 5th grade are eligible and welcome to join our Pack at anytime during the year. Application forms are available on this website.  Pack Leaders also hold “Join Scouting Nights” each Fall and Spring to give presentations about Scouting, provide information to interested youth and their parents, take contact information, and collect applications.
